A pure mambo dancer's social brought to us by NJ performer, instructor and all-around nice guy Mario Gonzalez, AKA "Mambo Mario B". There may be dance performances at some socials to be announced. This event is now being held at Mario B's new studio, recently renovated. There is a good size wooden dance floor which is bit "slow" to "medium speed" (so wear your more slippery shoes), a good DJ sound system, free bottled water and snacks & dips, and beverages such as juices will be sold. No age limit to come and party. Everyone is invited! No dress code…."dress to sweat"….come as you are to dance hard. In the summer, it can get hot so wear very light casual clothing.

An On 2 mambo social held in a neighborhood salsa dance studio with 1 medium size room. The crowd ranges from 50 to 100 dancers, depending on whether it's a regular social or a special event with several performances or other special attractions, and depending on whether there are many dancers from the wider mambo community; where music is almost entirely pure classic salsa plus a little cha cha, bachata & merengue. played by DJ Mario B and DJ Pablo Toto plus guest DJs sometimes. Dancing in Almost entirely "New York On 2" timing and style.

New York Salsa Dance DJ's: DJ Jay Vee of New York

I have been a DJ for at least 20 years. I was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. My opinion of mixing Salsa is: the Salsa dancers have great energy which makes it rewarding for me as a DJ. I send energy to the dance floor and the energy comes back to the DJ booth. Salsa music give a DJ an instant dance floor compared to other types of dance music where a DJ must "work the crowd" into dancing. With other types of dance music DJs normally have to build the excitement on the dance floor throughout the evening, whereas with Salsa the excitement starts almost immediately. I mix all kinds of music from Swing to Hustle as well as new pop/dance and I must admit, my Salsa nights are always my favorite nights to spin. It is very gratifying.

I have so many favorite Salsa bands it is hard to pick just three, but I am partial to Jimmy Bosch, Eddie Palmieri and Wayne Gorbea. Of course, Tito Puente is not even touchable. I like these artist because they have consistently come out with so much good music.

The most important thing to be a good DJ for any music is not playing what you personally like, but reading the crowd and knowing what your dancers like to dance to. You must feel the music in your heart and in your soul as well. I became a DJ because the money was good and I was too lazy to work a real job. My love for music also played a big role. I collected records for many years before I started DJing and a friend told me I should be a DJ at his friend's club because of that collection. So I did. The rest is history…..

This event is held in a large studio with a good wooden dance floor which is "medium speed" and usually there is a good crowd so you will have plenty of partners to dance with at various levels. Music is almost entirely pure classic salsa plus a little cha cha played by DJ Ray Colon plus an occasional guest DJ. People are dancing almost entirely "New York On 2" timing and style in their casual attire.

New York Salsa Dance Experiences: Differences Between the SF and NYC Salsa Scenes

Here are the differences between the SF and NYC salsa scenes that I saw during my 5 nights of salsa:

* It is a very young crowd. There is more age diversity or lets say a larger age range in San Francisco.
* The skill level of the NYC clubs is very high. There were almost no beginners and intermediates. I would rate myself as an intermediate. I try to dance with advanced dancers whenever I can because how else will I get from here to there? NYC was fun but a bit intimidating.
* All the music was DJ music this past week. No live music which SF has regularly Tuesday – Saturday. I would assume that NYC has live music somewhere sometime.
* The places I went to in NYC were relatively small crowds relative to the crowds in SF but I realize that crowd size can be highly variable.
* I wasn't going out for the lessons. The one lesson at Cache was about 30 minutes of the basics. Club lessons in the Bay Area are a much bigger thing. They go on for about an hour. There are beginner and intermediate level lessons. They can sometimes get pretty large attendance. There can easily be 40-50 couples at Allegro or Cocomo for lessons in SF

Basically, I had a great time and look forward to returning sometime. Thanks. I wouldn't have been able to have this good a time without DF member recommendations!

Abakua Latin Dance Studio

A club with soft lighting, seating, attractive decor, a real cash bar and a good DJ sound system. This is an opportunity to dance in an attractive studio setting with lots of dance floor space and a very friendly environment. There is a very reasonable admission price and beverages will be available for purchase. The dress code is "casual" and all ages are welcome and invited.

The music is almost entirely pure classic old school salsa plus a good amount of cha cha played by DJ Frankie Martinez and occasional guest DJs and dances Almost entirely "New York On 2" timing and style.

This is an elegant dance studio on a fourth floor, one side of which is Club 412. It opens at 9pm but few people show up before 10:30. It is a social so I socialized with the few people who were there and got in some dancing. They were mostly beginners. At 10:30 the really experienced dancers showed up. This club is where I finally met my match with the NYC salsa scene. The music was great but it was also very challenging for my level of musicality which is pretty weak on my part. I couldn't really keep up. I did enjoy watching for a while. I would recommend this club to highly skilled dancers. This club gives me something to aspire too.

Each week our guest deejays spin classic Salsa music, along with Mambo and just a touch of the Cha Cha that is seldom heard anywhere else in mainstream Latin clubs …. Coined as "Home of the Dancer" and "A Friend to the Dance Community", every week some of the best dancers all around the Tri-state area descend upon CACHE to strut their stuff…. CLUB CACHE has also become international! Just about every week we host dancers from all over Canada, the UK, Japan, Italy, France and Germany…. So whether you're a beginner or advanced dancer, instructor, performer, or just have an overall love for the music, the dance, or the culture–come out and be a part of this NYC underground Salsa nightclub experience.

This place is a hidden gem and I do mean hidden. It was a block from my hotel and I thought I would just check the location earlier in the evening. All I saw was an Italian restaurant. It turns out that at about 9:30 a sign goes up over a door that normally says "Tony and Tina's Wedding" and "voila" you have Club Cache. Down some steep stairs and there is a nice dance/performance space. There was a short on-2 beginners lesson by the bar. The skill level of the dancers was very high and I recognized some of the dancers from Sidebar. Once again I had a fantastic time here and would highly recommend this club. It starts a little late. I was there from 10pm – 1:30pm.
